Now that the St. Louis Cardinals have added free-agent outfielder Carlos Beltran to their lineup, they have to decide how to construct their batting order.
New manager Mike Matheny is leaning toward batting Beltran second, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports . At least that is the plan for now.
"With Carlos, I think that term 'flexibility' keeps getting used," Matheny told the newspaper. "So, I'll ride with that."
Beltran has hit third during the majority of his career, but he would hit behind shortstop Rafael Furcal and ahead of first baseman Lance Berkman and left fielder Matt Holliday in Matheny’s projected lineup.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that Berkman (fourth), Holliday (seventh) and Beltran (ninth) all ranked in the top 10 in the NL in OPS this past season.
