Felix had put tremendous pressure on herself to win the race after coming up short twice before. Her winning time was 21.88 seconds, far off the scorching 21.69 that she ran five weeks ago in Eugene, Ore., at the Olympic Trials, but it matched the fourth-fastest 200 of her career and it was run into a slight headwind. “Relief,” Felix’s mother, Marlean, said when asked to describe her first emotion after her daughter reached her goal.

Cause of the Waldo Canyon Fire remained under investigation

The Waldo Canyon Fire is Colorado's most destructive on record, surpassing the 257 homes consumed in recent weeks by a much larger blaze north of Denver near Fort Collins. The cause hasn't been determined, said Jerri Marr of the U.S. Forest Service. A police spokeswoman, Carrie McCuffland, said there were no specific reports from citizens of missing people, and that the unaccounted-for list consists of individuals who apparently neglected to register with the city or the American Red Cross as evacuees. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said two people have been arrested in connection with a burglary at an evacuated home.

Colorado wildfire causes a mandatory evacuation of 32,000 people

Officials have ordered more than 32,000 people to flee their homes as firefighters struggled to beat back a fiercely aggressive wildfire raging at the edge of Colorado Springs on Wednesday. The Waldo Canyon Fire, which started June 23, has burned 15,324 acres and is 5 percent contained. A more precise figure wasn't available because of the intensity of the fire. Winds gusting to 65 mph through mountain canyons blew the wildfire through containment lines into northwest Colorado Springs on Tuesday afternoon. It roared downhill, burning to the ground the Flying W Ranch, a popular Western-style tourist destination. Incident Commander Rich Harvey concurred. "I hate wind ... Wind is big factor in how we do this fire. It won't stay in the same place. The winds keep shifting on us." President Barack Obama plans to pay a visit to the area on Friday to view the damage, the White House said.

Oh my God, Microsoft bought a social network

Microsoft just announced it had bought online social network firm Yammer Inc for $1.2 billion in cash, which will allow the software company to offer a service like Facebook's to corporate customers.

The $1.2 billion buyout comes as Google, Oracle and SAP continue expanding business-use social networks integrated into their respective product lines. With Yammer, employees can use a private, online company directory to contact colleagues, form networks, chat, share links and post news. Yammer reportedly currently has 4 million registered users, but only about 20 percent of those pay for premium services; the rest get the service free. Yammer will be added as a new Microsoft division and the company’s founder David Sacks will stay on as chief executive officer.

More than 1,000 firefighters in Arizona and Colorado were fighting at least five major blazes that have consumed more than 55 square miles (142 square km) of ponderosa forest, brush and grass, and a new blaze erupted in Utah on Thursday. Firefighters protected neighborhoods by burning grass, shrubs and small brush to prevent the wildfire from advancing toward homes. Crews got a boost as wind pushed the blaze to an area scorched by a previous wildfire, which slowed its growth. "We're praying for the firefighters' safety," said Lynn Ray, the manager of an emergency shelter for evacuees at a school in Mayer, Arizona, where billowing gray-black smoke from the Gladiator Fire was clearly visible. U.S. Forest Service investigators say the crazy 56-year-old Weber, a mental health counselor at Colorado State University, tried to stamp out the fire Monday but then fled as the blaze spread. The man later reported starting the fire to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, officials said.

The Forest Service issued Weber a citation for causing a fire without an allowance. He faces a $300 fine. However, the authorities also plan to pursue restitution for the blaze.
